Statement


Fraser MacBeath is an audiovisual artist from the Isle of Lewis. Using the mediums of sound, film and installation, Fraser creates work which combines elements of musique concrète, sound art and ambient music with abstract film and installation. his work focuses on themes of memory, culture, hauntology, sociological issues and the relationship between tradition and modernity.

His practice consists primarily of videography, capturing and manipulating field recordings, reusing archive material and showcasing the outcomes in immersive sound environments. Fraser’s home in the Outer Hebrides plays an important role in the work he produces and lately his focus has lain in bringing attention to population decline in rural Scotland.


Biography


Fraser Macbeath is primarily trained as a sound artist but often works with the moving image. He holds a BA with honors in Audio Production from the SAE Insitute in Glasgow and an MDes in Sound For The Moving Image from The Glasgow School of Art where he finalised with distinction. Since leaving education in 2021, Fraser has exhibited and won awards for his AV work in the Outer Hebrides and also on Radiophrenia in Glasgow. More recently Fraser displayed his first large scale installation bringing attention to population decline in the Hebrides at the 2022 edition of Hidden Door Festival in Edinburgh and currently he is working closley with the University of Edinburgh and the Isle of Harris Distillery in further developing his work in rural Scottish soundscapes.
