Sculpture depicts the launching of the St Kilda Mailboat, a practice devised bt John Sands a member of an Australian crew who were shipwrecked there around 1876. Laterly comprising of a sheepskin bladder tied to a small wooden boat containing messages in a bottle with a letter asking the finder to post it to its destination with a penny being enclosed for onward postage. Letters from four out of every six bottles were estimated to reach there destination. The sculpture is based on an old photograph taken at that time.
