As a lens-based artist I work with digital media in both still and moving image. The main body of my work is the production of time-based single, dual and multi-channel video projections with ambient sound, presented in immersive installations and screenings in site-specific, gallery and cinematic locations.
The work moves between the still and moving image, with tone & colour inversions causing perceptual and temporal slippage and estrangement, accentuating anomalous materiality, ambiguities and the unknowable
Based on the time-based installations I also produce prints in various formats. Digital C-type prints on aluminium in installations of multiple images, often triptychs, or singly mounted on lightboxes. I am at present developing photogravure and colour polymer intaglio prints.
For the last 12 years I have worked from my main base in Coigach, in the far northwest of Scotland. Embedded in the experience of this remote and elemental landscape and coastal-scape of Coigach, Wester Ross and the Hebrides has underpinned my focus on ‘Ecology and Art’ work and curatorial projects. The core issues in my work are an ecological consciousness of Earth’s aeonic timespan and the evolution and sustainability of the biosphere in the face of anthropogenic destruction and climate change.
These issues are the central focus of my 5 year series of work in the “Aeonic” project. Central to the recent development is the “Tellus Nullius” body of work. “Nullius” is a term relating to the notion of territory unclaimed or unowned. ”Tellus” is the Earth and its three spheres - the hydrosphere, the atmosphere, the lithosphere and their ecosphere.
I enact my practice through both research and creative processes, previously working within Science/ Art collaborative and research projects at centres including: King’s College London, University College Londonand University of Wales Aberystwyth on critical issues of visual and spatial perception and consciousness, altered states of mind and immersive experience.
Working largely outside of the commercial gallery system, I focus on developing projects in public centres and non-gallery, site specific installations in unusual venues and locationss, often with significant past histories: railway arches, old pubs, an ex-tea warehouse, old church, ex-engineering works etc.
I am presently working towards an “Art & Ecology North” symposium and network that originally was planned as the central focus of the Aeonic project. This was to culminate in a scheduled solo exhibition at An Talla Solais, Ullapool, in Sept/Oct 2020 and touring. Unfortunately postponed 3 times due to Covid shutdowns & then the gallery’s loss of key site, this project is still on track and I hope to realise these plans in 2022-23.
I have exhibited nationally across the UK, and internationally in Holland and Germany, in independent and public galleries and in independent site-specific locations. I have also worked and exhibited within Science/ Art collaborative and research projects at institutions including: King’s College London, University College London, University of Wales Aberystwyth and University of Gloucester on issues of visual and temporal consciousness.
Earlier exhibitions in public galleries include: Ikon Gallery Birmingham; Bluecoat Centre, Liverpool; Harris Museum and Art Gallery, Preston; Bradford City Art Gallery and Museum; Royal Albert Memorial Museum, Exeter. Private gallery exhibitions include: Corr Contemporary Art, Voltar Gallery London, and Brün Gallery, Dusseldorf,
Site-specific installation projects include: London- Aeon in defunct offices; Anon in an old bank, Next Stop in Strand Underground Station; Track in Shoreditch railway arches: Solitaire series in Bethnal Green defunct pub, Hoxton warehouse and Rio Cinema Hackney: internationally -“Kunsystemen” in Maastricht and Roermond, Holland.
For the last 12 years I have worked between my home & studio in Coigach in the far north west of Scotland and a base in London, where I am a visiting artist & associate lecturer in Visual Culture Studies in Medical Humanities, at King’s College, London.
